I have been using FTM2006 which is quite good, but recently got the new FTM 2008 and so far it seem brilliant

Thanks for the suggestions. I will have a look at the sites but as you say there are so many I just thought I would see if anyone had any personal recommendations.
I'm not entirely sure what I want it to be able to do yet! (I'm pretty new to all this).
The familytreemaker one looks good to e because you also get 3/6 months subscription to Ancestry included in the price.
More research needed I think!

At our last count we had 27 different programs.

There is no best and Robert I have to take you to task over your statement that TMG knocks spots off the other programs, it knocks spots off as far as your concerned because it does everything you want it to do :0)))

I personally would recommend at least 3 others before TMG because they do what I want and TMG does not. TMG will not create a tree with everybody on it is one example whereas Family Historian, FTM and Genbox will and there's even a free program, GenoPro that will do it although in my opinion it's not a very attractive result.

As already stated the only way to find out what's best for you is to try them, most software developers now have a free download of their program for you to rest drive.

Legacy is a good free one which can be upgraded

One of the best has to be familytreemaker, certainly is as far as I know the best one for showing lots of different charts.

I've been reading some of the threads on here and the hints and tips for Newbies. Thank you so much to all the 'veterans' who give their advice and help so freely.
Several people mention getting some good family tree software. I've just got my tree on this site at the moment but probably should think about getting something a bit more specialised. Any recommendations on which would be best?
