Well there isnt a lot online for Norfolk pre 1837 as they refused to hand over the church records to the Mormons (familysearch.org - IGI). Remember that registration wasnt compulsory until 1875.

There are quite a few areas of Norfolk missing in the 1861 census - it will tell you which on ancestry if you go to 1861 and then read about it.

What was his occupation? Do you have the sons birth cert for mums maiden name?

Ill bump up a thread for links for Norfolk records online.

Hi, can anybody help me? I'm fairly new to all this so please bear with me.

I have been following my dad's line backwards, I have got as far as George Neve (my great great grandad) but now I'm stuck!

I was quite pleased with myself for finding census records for George Neve in 1901, 1891, 1881 and 1871. These all show him living in (Gt) Yarmouth, Norfolk with his wife Ann (until 1891, then a widower) and children including William Neve who I know is my great grandfather.

These census records are all pretty consistant and fit with what I know. His place of birth is shown as Stalham, Norfolk on each with an EYB of 1834-1837.

Unfortunately, it all goes wrong from here! I cannot find an 1861 census (he should have been about 27 and already been married to Ann with one daughter Alice).

I cannot find an 1851 census - should be 17 - possibly unmarried, maybe with parents?

I cannot find any birth records for a George Neve born in 1834 (+/-) 5 years in Stalham, Norfolk.

I have found a possible marrige record - A George Neve marriage registered in Oct/Nov/Dec 1851 in Aylsham, Norfolk (which would fit because wife Ann was born in Aylsham?)

I can't find any death records that appear to fit (must be after 1901).

I can send for the marriage certificate to see if that helps but does anyone have any other ideas?

Sorry for the long post.

Andrea
