To me it looks like:-

1. Retired Labourer
2. Marine Gatherer (?)
3. Hooker (?) in Warehouse
4. Retired Labourer.
5. Marine (?) Gatherer

Thought it was labourer but could not fathom other word, or Mary's Occupation.

Must have saved some money to be able to retire at 53 in 1851, must try and find out what a marine gather was doing in Manchester.

Id agree 1., 2. 3. 4. 5. (though it just seems to say gather this time).

I first thought the marine gathering would be some sort of scavenging by the sea/river but I guess thats unlikely! And I have this thought in the back of my mind that "marine" is some sort of material? Ill have a google in a sec.

The "hooker" in the warehouse, could be ok. My own father was a docker and on his belt he carried a large hook which was used to grab into sacks and pull them down onto your shoulders.

I cant find the material marine - but I guess this may just fit:

Marine plant gatherers rake seaweed, dulse or irish moss from beaches, rocks or shallow water. They then load this material into carts, wagons or other receptacles, spread gatherings to dry and remove foreign objects, and transport gatherings to a processing plant.

I just looked at a site giving old occupations - a gatherer was a glassworker. Not sure how that would fit with marine though.

This fits in with material.
Hooker 19c. Textile mill worker operating machinery which laid out fabric in uniform folds to required length

I think in 1851 that 53 wouldn't be too early to retire as the average life span was a lot less than it is now.

I'd say Heather is right about the Marine Plant Gatherer explanation. That's the sort of thing I thought it would be or if not cockles etc.
