clerk in 19th century

Does anyone know about the above? My greatgrandmother`s father was clerk on her marriage cert. An American researcher has told me that a clerk could have a farm , land etc --not convinced --think he wants my money for further research, |

Just looked in our Collins quite large Dictionary and it gives all sorts of descriptions, even Am. and Canad. but nothing mentioning a farm, or land. etc. only the usual ones that we know of!!. |

He just may have been the Church Clerk, the one who wrote down all the entries on the register. If you go to the local CRO you can sometimes find out more about church clerks as they often did other jobs as well and were quite important people in their own right, within that community. Not sure how your American friend has come to that conclusion but there is no accounting for folk! |
