Thanks for your reply, that's what I thought it looked like,but he is only 43! which is why I thought it must be something else. Would there have been pensions at that time? I guess the only way I might find out what he actually did is to get a marriage or death cert which might show his occupation.

doesnt look like pensioner on the actual image though, dont know what it says but its not pensioner

Just wondering if he had been in the army looking at the address in 1881 and with the children born in Dover and Woolwich.

If he was retired army or marines he could well be a pensioner.
