I've altered the resolution to 300 and that's done the trick.

I knew it would be something simple!

Looks like you may have it sorted, 1200 is the resolution (dpi) dots per inch, the higher the number the more finer the scan and the bigger th file, 1200 is far to high a resolution, that's why your files are so large, reduce it to 300 or even a bit less.

Hi Margaret,

I just noticed you have an Epson scanner/printer, so do I but mine is a Epson Stylus DX5050 model. I remember my son-in-law tried to set up the printer with the disc supplied with the printer and it wouldn't work, it wouldn't set it up properly. He contacted Epson and they said with Windows XP it wouldn't set up the printer, my son-in-law had to set it up a different way himself, Epson sent another disc but it didn't work either.

Hve sent you a pm on using adobe photoshop I have tried to keep it simple and have given you some example sizes in Inch cm and pixels to give you an idea

I have sent you a message ok. I think Ron will get back to you he is very good with computer and photocopyer/scanner things. Very nice guy has helped me a lot too with my computer problems as well as a picture I wanted to resize. You wont find anyone more helpfull than Ron, really nice guy..

Ron I've done what you suggested. I still end up with an enormous 'file' - 64,564Kb. far too large to send via e-mail.

You said 300 'is plenty good enough for the resolution' - I don't understand that, perhaps that's where I'm going wrong?

The resolution, at the moment is at 1200, but I honestly don't understand what that means.

There are various options available on the 'resolution' but again I just don't understand what they mean.

Put photo in scanner.

Open Photoshop. Click on File. Then click on Import, then the Twain for your printer. The scanner should now do a pre scan, when it's done that a window will open and you will get the chance to select the settings regarding resolution, B&W, Colour, etc, 300 is plenty good enough for the resolution.

The scanner will now scan it properly and the photo will open in Photoshop. Now you can see and alter the size of the photo by going to Image at the top of the page. You can then click File and Save As, here you can select .jpg format.

Margaret, I had the same frustrating problem, I just COULD NOT understand how to do photos. Do you have someone nearby who could physically show you (the kid next door maybe)? Once I was shown I then learnt it quickly and it was so easy, I had been trying to change pixels and goodness knows what before. I didn´t need to do any of those things. Don´t give up Margaret, it is so rewarding having photos on your PC - makes your gen come alive. Good luck.

A pixel is screen-dependent; that is, the dimensions of screen elements vary with the display system and resolution. It is used to describe the main measure of unit that make up a graphic in online advertising, similiar to how inches are used in print media advertising.

Tried it again - it didn't work - wouldn't even 'save' this time.

Pixels? I know that my T.V. screen and computer graphics are made up of Pixels but what is a pixel? I'm 'old school' - ft. & inches etc.

I think 'computer-speak' is another language - one that I will never understand.

I'm going to have another go. I've selected a photo, it's 3.25 ins. x 2.25 ins. (why doesn't my computer do fractions?)
