Hi Andrew
I had this problem so I bought FMT and imported a gedcom from GR and corrected it once I was satisfied it was ok I deleted my GR tree and then exported it as a gedcom back from FMT to GR.

Definately keep your tree elsewhere as well. You can buy Family Tree Maker (I use this), you can download Legacy or PAF for free or you can keep it online on Tribal Pages (also free).

Try getting some software as mentioned above and import your GR tree into it, see if it is still corrupt.

Hi Claire

Yes, it is my GR tree that is corrupt.

I have just found that a sizeable chunk of my tree has been corrupted with spurious relationship links all over the place.

Is there a way of restoring the tree, or do I have to delete the entries concerned and re-enter them?

I do have a paper copy, so can fix it this way if required.

Finally, is there a method of backing up the tree in case this happens again?

Thanks in advance for any advice.
