I contacted GR and asked if they had any plans to re-instate the 'Names List'. The answer - NO!

Such a shame, it was so useful. I had found other relatives (who I knew nothing of) from those lists. You can't type a name in the search box of someone you don't know ever existed.

I was lucky that I had noted down, on paper, the 'tree access' name and how we connected.

Using that I went back to the 20 odd people, through my message centre, sent messages (here and on e.mail where we had swopped personal addresses), and got replies and access to just 3 trees.

I guess the rest, on here, were no longer interested in searching or hadn't updated the site with their new e.mail addresses:(

As for those who also gave me a personal e.mail address.....?????

Hey Ho Hum lol

I remember that, it was handy. I haven't a clue whats going on with this site now, I find it quite hard to find anything!

Hi Janice,
I e-mailed at the time and they replied saying the problem was now fixed. I e-mailed them back after first checking my contacts again to find that I could still not see the trees. I emailed back saying sorry but no the problem had not been fixed - am still waiting for a reply.
Have now sent another e-mail and waiting again.

Hi Chris in Sussex and J :
I also lost all the trees I had been given contact with before the previous problems a few months ago.
I did query Genes Support at the time but did not get any definitive answer to problem - so seems as if it was probably quite widespread.

I have the same problem as Chris - Can no longer see most of the trees I had access to before they let all contacts see the trees a couple of months ago.

I would like them to bring the list of names back too, but with the added facility of the search they have now as well. Sometimes by looking through the list of names you could find other possible connections too. Not so easy if you have to type everyone of your surnames in to the search box - that would take forever when you have alot of surnames.

First of all I wish I had trees to look at....All my contacts trees disapeared earlier this year!! And no my contacts didn't delete them en mass lol

To view the couple I have managed to regain I use Heather's method. I find it easier than the old listing one as it brings up only those with that particular surname.

Hi Johnathon,
Have you tried recently. I got the new web layout yesterday and it wont let me do it now. I used to be able to open two windows by selecting someone elses tree in the general selection and then selecting "Go to my tree" for the second window but the new system swaps them over, unless there is something else I could try.

Judith

Judith Report 28 Aug 2007 18:15

Martin, after you have opened your own tree click ctrl N a second tree window will open which you can move to sit alongside the first and go to the "other trees" option at the top of that window to open the tree you need to view alongside yours.

Hi all, My main gripe along this line is that you used to be able to bring up art of your tree and the same part of another persons. This made cross referring of notes so easy. now they tell me that you can only bring up your names or the other trees names but not at the same time. Anyone else find this annoying?

Margaret,

Look at your own family tree, and there is a little box that has a drop down on r. hand top and it will give you the names of your contact, and just click on it.
Hope it helps.

Thanks all.

Sorry Peter, but I found it less tedious to look through an alphabetical list of names than to attempt to scroll through a 'tree'.

It's relatively easy to follow the Male line but when you need to follow the Female line - not quite so easy.

The full list was removed last year. It was of limited use for anything other than very small trees as it was just too tedious to scroll up and down it.

As Heather says, you now have to use the search option at the top of the page for the surname you are interested in.

If you mean looking at the full family tree i've had them on recently but with some trees it won't work, i don't know why though. Sorry i can't be of any help.Regards Barbara.

Heather Report 28 Aug 2007 16:18

Margaret - what you have to do now is look towards the top of the persons tree - it will give little boxes usually with the originators name and birth year in. What I do is delete their name and birth year and then enter just the surname Im interested in and that brings up the part of the tree with them.

When being given access to another Member's Tree you could also view a List of all the Names in that particular tree. It made it so much easier to find 'the connection'. For some reason it was 'dropped'. I've recently asked GR if it will be re-instated. They've told me it's still there - it isn't! I don't think they know what I'm talking about.
