So you know when they married and where Carol? How do you know that?

(Kath - LOL - as I said, NO IDEA when the place is north of Watford - well, Birmingham!)

If you are certain of that marriage then have you got the GRO reference for it? If you have, you go to GRO online and enter the details and buy the cert for £7.

Shoot me down if I get the area wrong: Is this the one you say is the marriage?

You said initially that he was married to Hannah on 1851 census.........is that correct?

Ive just looked Heather and they are listed as married 1856, there was a 14 year age gap and childrens ages seem ok

No I havent kathleen, i went on an IOM family history site and went through everything i could to look for Redheads in any of the districts at the time but had no luck,

I may return as its been a while, the people were helpful but seemed vague about redheads as it isnt a manx name,

Does anyone know where redhead was common?

Yes, it could help as it would give his fathers name and occupation

You need to look for yourself - there seems to be quite a few possibles. Have you never bought certificates before?

Check out the age of the eldest child and the marriage is likely a year or so before (thought not always!! can be a lot later or earlier).

Look for the marriage on freebmd - you are lucky that you have a fairly rare name there - enter Robert Redhead and then look for a marriage in the right area - eldest kiddies birth place/wifes birth place? and time scale with one of the brides on the page shown as hannah.

True Heather, he must have reason to say that. I havent found his marriage, would that help?

People sometimes gave the nearest big place to their actual place of birth. At other times they might give the place they were brought up.

I would have thought anyone saying they were born on the Isle of Man, either WAS born there or spent their childhood there and THOUGHT they were born there.

Have you looked at all the parish records because 1823 was before civil registration.

Well yes, if they were born one place but move to another at an early age I expect they would believe they had always been there. But the isle of Man is pretty specific isnt it - not a place where there would have been a lot of movement to and fro the mainland.

Have you found his marriage? Im no good at northern england geography - Is this one likely:

Im very confused by my GGG Grandad, Robert Redhead who on the 1851 census is listed as being born in the isle of man.

He lived in Workington at the time of the census and and is married to hannah. I believe he was born about 1823 but can find no trace of his birth on the IOM

Does anyone have any ideas, did some people get confused as to their birthplace/
