Hello, I have a Betsey (Bessie) Baker b 1866 Monmoutshire Wales. In 1891 she was working as a nursery maid for a George Barker, Major in the Royal Engineers in AIldershot England. I cannot find her in England or Wales in 1901 so am wondering if this is when she went to Australia. Betsey remained a spinster all her life. She eventually came back to England prior to 1943. She eventually became governess. Any help would be fantastic and really appreciated. Thanks in advance, Lou |

I have a feeling that Australian censuses are destroyed as soon as the info has been collated............no doubt one of our Australian members will correct me if I'm wrong. Reg |

That's correct, Reg. Unfortunately she could have gone anywhere - or do you have definite information that she went to Australia? Anyway, if she never married, and died in England, she won't appear in the BMD records. There's a thread somewhere offering Ancestry and Find my Past passenger list look-ups - you could try that. Alternatively, if you know which Australian State she went to, Google for the 'Ask a Librarian' service in that State, and ask them to look for her on the electoral rolls. |

A Bessie Baker aged 24 travelled to Queensland in 1889 on a ship called the Merkara. She appears to have been travelling with a John Baker. However, if you're sure the Bessie in the 1891 census is yours, they're presumably not the same person, unless she came back very quickly. |

Hi Reg & Mary, Thank you so much for responding. All I have is what my aunts told me - that their mum received parcels from a spinster aunt who went to Australia, and that this aunt came back to England around the 1930's and died before their dad in 1943, she was supposed to be a governess. Betsey & Sarah are the only spinsters in the family, Betsey being the nurserymaid. Sarah being a Domestic Servant. Mary I'm sure the Bessie you found isn't mine. I have photos of mine in her governess uniforms so I'm sure that's her in 1891. Lou |
