How do I go about finding out if someone left a wi

I would like to find out of someone in my tree left a will. His name was Henry Pennal Batcheldor and he died 23 November 1897 in Tunbridge Wells (I have DC). He seems to have been fairly well off and doesn't appear to have had any children, so I am hoping he mentioned other family members. I can't visit any local centres as I live in NZ. I did read that I should order a film from FHL so have had a look here and think I should probably order FHL 2111693 Admins & Wills Index 550-553. I am guessing that the film will give me some probate number and then I will be able to order it? Is there someone that can tell me if this is the easiest and cheapest method of finding out if he left a will. Thanks Susan

Thank you for the sugestion. Do they refund any part of the 5 pounds if they don't find anything? And would you happen to know if they take Visa? Thanks Susan

I know that they do not give any refund from when I asked them to do a search and they could not find a will. This site states http://www.lawontheweb(.)co.uk/willsafterdeath.htm you can write and ask the Registry officials to make the search for you. You have to write to The Postal Searches & Copies Dept, York Probate Sub-Registry Castle Chambers Clifford Street York YO1 9RG Ideally the information they will need will be the full name, address and date of death of the deceased, requesting the years to be searched and the appropriate fee. This is £5, which covers the four year period from the date of death, plus £3 for each subsequent 4 year period. If a grant is traced, the fee includes a copy of the Grant and Will (if any). If you do not have all the information then the Officials will do what they can, provided you have at least the correct full name. Payment should be made by cheque or postal order to HMCS. If applying from outside the UK payment needs to be by international money order in pounds sterling.
