For anyone thinking of visiting the British Library please note the following. You MUST take ID in the form of utility bill and proof of signature i.e. credit card, driving licence. Yesterday I made a special trip up to London for the purpose of researching only to be turned away at the first hurdle as I had no utility bill with me. (Not a thing I would normally carry around). So to make sure that no one else has the same problem I thought I would point it out. Thelma

Thelma You must have been 'gutted' :( But I think your post is a timely warning for all those new to researching 'offline'. If you are thinking of visiting a Record Office/Research Office then be prepared.... My OH is a specialist in ID fraud prevention and he suggests that if you have these three 'types' of documents in your possession you won't have any difficulty. They will probably only ask for two of the three, confirmation of address and signature....But better safe than sorry! 1. Passport or Full 2 part Driving Licence (You need both parts) 2. Council Tax Bill (or similar utility bill) 3. Credit/Debit Card Chris

I wonder why they can't they do what most companies etc. do if you order something. Is it not possible for them to ask you for your post code, you confirm the street number and hey presto, job done. Or is that all too simple? Thelma

Our utility bills are in my husband's name so what am I supposed to do?

Janice OH says.... A Bank or Credit Card statement with your name and address would probably pass the 'residence' test with a Record Office. He also suggests you contact the RO ect direct and check with them what ID they are willing to accept. Chris
