Ezra Francis Walter Baker was born in Polstead,Suffolk in 1881. He was killed in action in the first world war. Unfortunately I have been unable to find any listing of him on the CWGC website. A search of E.Baker produces 115 results,99 of which can be eliminated because of incorrect age,permutation of initials and names. Of the remaining E.Baker's with unknown ages, is there any way I can discover if any of these soldiers were Ezra? Would a medal card give the full name? Any info/ advice would be very much appreciated, thank you. Rob

Rob, Have you tried searching for medal card details on the National Archives site? I cant remember if they give you his rank ,number etc but if they do you may be able to get a match on the CWGC. Nicky

I've just looked at the documentsonline site for him, but he does not appear to be listed. His service records may survive, but they will be at National Archives.

Do you know where he was living when he enlisted? He may be on a local war memorial, and his number and regiment may be given on that.

Have you tried looking under all of his forenames, one at a time? Reg

Thank you everyone for your replies,searches,info and suggestions. My last 'sighting' of Ezra Baker was in the 1901 census, when he was living in Assington,Suffolk. Unfortunately I have no infomation on where he was living at the time he enlisted (I'm assuming here that he wasn't already a member of the armed forces) or of his unit or regimental number. The only possible clue is that his brother,Alfred Baker, (who was also killed in the Great War) was a member of the Essex regiment.

Suffolk County Council website appears to have info on the Roll of Honour for the county, but he doesn't seem to be listed. But you can contact them regarding info on local war memorials. Might be worth a try!
