I think Sherlock Holmes used foot messengers in his films.

Basic reaction is to say Why not? There were no telephones etc. although telegrams were around but expensive. So if you were in business with lots of letters to send in your vicinity you employed a (foot) messenger. The mail service was pretty good though. In the course of one day your could send a letter, get a reply to which you responded and get areply to that too! Royal Mail please note - that was in the course of one day not one week! C

The answer is probally in the question really... but just wondering if anyone knows what the job description was in 1871, and what would be the messengers class in society? for example- Would gypsies be employed as foot messengers? Julie
