Have just recives my ggrandfathers marriage certificate. John Bright marrying Elizabeth Williams 22 Nov 1873, Llanhilleth Parish Church, Monmouthshire, Wales. The only address for residence is Llanhilleth. Problem is fathers name given as William Edwards, she is listed as Spinster andjohn Bright as Bachelor. How do I sort through all the Williams or Edwards born circa 1852 in Pontypool Monmouthshire to make an educated guess at the right one to get her birth certificate. Frank |

Point one.............birth registration wasn't compulsory until 1875, so the birth may not have been registered. Point two.........when ordering certs, you have the option of specifying 'checking points'......the father's name could be used for that purpose. Have you located the couple on censuses prior to their marriage? If so, the mother's forename would also be a potential 'checking point'. Is the bride's age specified as 21? Or merely as 'full'? Do the names of the witnesses hold any clues? Reg |

Hi Mower man , You don't need me to tell you have a task there. Like me with Emily williams and Benjamin Williams. And my Evans family of LLanhilleth too they are a nightmare. Do you have your Elizabeth on any census at all? If so can you give the particular on here please. So that i can try to help you. How old was she on certificate ? It is possible for a mistake to be made and she might have been married before. What is her fathers occupation? What is her husbands occupation ? Where were they all born and when? Also when its been narrowed down by using census ect. then you look who's died . When you have the least number possible you send of to gro with ref number and ask them to check certain things and add the numbers of the other elizabeths too. It will cost the money for certificate which is £7 plus £ 3 for each one checked I await your information. Best wishes Lorraine |

Thanks all for your response Firstly that is the couple on the 18881 and 1891 census. The occupation of both John Bright and William Edwards is Collier. Ages just give as: of full age As far as I know they were all born in or around the Pontypol area in or around 1853c Have been unable to trace John Bright exact birth as there is no record for him in the GRO records or at the local Torffaen local registry office. Thanks Frank |

Lorraine, Yes, that them his mothers name was Harriet Hawkins father Samuel Bright, not sure of theeWorlock connection not come acrossit before. Reg, Witness at marriage were: William Edwards and Mary Harvey. Not sure if this helps but John and Elizabeth had a son called John who went to America in 1912 and came back around the start of the second world war, he either used the name of Edwards or lived with a family called Edwards Frank |
