Can anyone recommend a decent photo restorer? I have a photo that is in very poor condition on a parchment type paper that has been rolled for years. It now needs some tender loving care. It could be posted but as you can all imagine that would scare me! I live in Brighton Sussex so would prefer to keep local. Thank you. Lester

Hi Lester, There is a shop in Queens road - they are on the same side as boots and just a couple of shops up. I had a photo transferred on to canvas in there and it cost something like £25.00. I think that they also do restoration. Good luck Julie

Hi Lester, It is next door ro Jessops now that you mention the name.. they sell old post cards etc. and there are loads of photos and canvas's in the window.

Before you try somewhere where you pay money, take a look at the Photo Restoration section on this website. They have restored (online) many of my photos for me. It's worth a go and it's free so if you don't like the results you haven't lost anything. Replace asterisk with a full stop. http://www.rootschat*com/forum/index.php/board,298.0.html Cheers, Horatia

If a photograph is rolled, over time the emulsion - the stuff containing the actual image - will have shrunk into its curled state. Straightening and flattening such a photograph will crack the emulsion creating even more damage, the emulsion may even detach in flakes, destroying the photograph. Restoring such a photograph is a very specialist job. Before you hand over your treasured photograph, ask how they are going to restore it, so you can gauge if they really know whet they are doing, or if they are enthusiastic amateurs. I'm reminded of my wife's great grandmother's gold charm bracelet, which my wife took to a high street jeweler to be cleaned. When she collected it she was given the chain - beautifully cleaned - and an envelope containing the charms all exactly as they were, and there were two missing ! Be warned - find out exactly what they are going to do *first*. -- Dave.
