If you apply to GRO online and your checking points are wrong, they will keep some of your money just for looking. If you apply direct to the local register office, and give one or more checking points, if it is wrong, they will return all your money. Dont forget to include a stamped addressed envelope. You can find the address of the local register office here http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/RegOffice/

Susan Ross Thanks for info on Samuel married to Annie (re Constance Archer) I know absolutely zilch about Constance apart from fathers name. On 1901 Census Samuel was in Leeds, states married but no one else with him. Am I being really thick - does base mean illigitimate? Thanks again Jackie

If this is the birth to which you refer, your best bet is to order it from the GRO.............if you know her mother's forename, quote that as a checking point. If it's the wrong person, you will be refunded part of your £7.00 Name: Constance Archer Year of Registration: 1905 Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep District: Belper County: Derbyshire Volume: 7b Page: 704 Reg

Did you get the father's name from Constance's marriage cert? If so, the info may not be accurate...........particularly if he was 'deceased' at the time of the marriage........illegitimate children often invented 'fathers' for their marriage lines. Reg

Hi Jackie Found your Samuel in 1891 married to Annie. Do you by any chance know anything about Constance Archer's mother? Wondering if she maybe base born and registered under Mum? Sue

If you have several 'possibles' then you could try individual registry offices with the checking info of father's name. That way if it doesn't match then you don't pay. Not all Registry Offices do them for family history but it doesn't hurt to write to find out. Remember you don't need the vol and page number that you do with the GRO. Of course, you could be unlucky and still get the wrong one if someone had a father with the same name too.

Sorry Heather, Janice and Reggie Couldn't fatham out how to add reply - eh dumbo I am. It's bluming Constance Archer (again Heather) b c 1905 Father Samuel - he lived in Leeds in 1901 but not with a wife (according to Census) although he's down as married. He was a boiler maker. The Leeds Constance has a different father Spoke to the Belper Register office re Constance Archer, Belper, they couldn't find any records of her anywhere. Don't know where to go from here Regards Jackie

Hi Jackie, Do you want to put up some info and let us try to help you? Or, when you order a cert ask for the father's name to be checked. That way you won't lose all your money if it's the wrong reference. Janice
