Can anyone advise me please as to what i should do next.My ancestor Hugh Goldie was born in Scotland in 1791.Sometime in his life he moved to Chichester as he married Elizabeth Blake there in 1826 and died there in 1851. I do not know which part of scotland he came from so cannot look at parish records and there is no mention of parents on marriage details.I want to go further back but can't and its so frustrating!!! |

Jenny, thanks you so much for looking.it could be him but the surname is spelt differently so I'm not sure. The list of his siblings shows his name spelt differently to them, also do you think he'd have two sisters called Suzannah? Sue |

Sue With Scottish families if the 1st Susannah died the next female born would be named Susannah - I've got several who did it and have seen it loads of times on others. Mary |

Hi Sue, I would bet my last £1 that this is your family. I would imagine the first Susannah died so they named their next Daughter after her. This happens very often. As for the different spelling, this again is very common. Would you like me to look on the Scottish census for you? |

From BVRI: Hugh Goldie born 28 Nov.1788, christened 30 Nov.1788, Low Church, Paisley, Renfrewshire. Parents James Goldie & Susanna McGaven. He must have died because there's another: Hugh Gouldie born 25 Jul.1792, christened 26 Jul.1792, Middle Church, Paisley, Renfrewshire. Parents Jame Gouldie & Susanna MacGavin. Note the different spellings. |

How come, Willow, on the 1851 census the widowed Elizabeth Goldie has a 28 year old son Andrew Black? She's also got her 2 Goldie sons Hugh 23 and James 21 and 2 daughters, a married Elizabeth Blackwell 19 and Margaret Goldie 15. |

Well done Claire, I have just spent the last hour or so looking for them, then found another Goldie, that I was trying to tie in with the Blacks and the Blackwell''s that I found on the 1851. Elizabeth had obviously been married before. Jenny. |

Hi Sue, have you got Hugh Goldie born 1791 Death Certificate? I have been trying to eliminate the Hugh Goldie who married the Jean Wallace. Jean has remarried by 1861 and looks like she is a Wiidow again. Jenny. |

Margaret - thanks for your help.Could you tell me what is BVRI as I've never heard of it. Is it a complete record, if it is then that must be the parents of my Hugh - fantastic! Yes , they are the children of Hugh, although I hadn't realised James was really called Henry James Goldie, as he is down as James on all the census. They also had two more children, Elizabeth and Margaret.Elizabeth married Andrew Blackwell (who is down as Black on the census) Jenny - I'm puzzled as to why you think Elizabeth was married before. Looking at the 1841 census there is a line between my family and the next two people the Blakes.I think they were a seperate family or lodgers. many thanks for all your help and interest, Sue |

Sue, I fist looked on the 1851 census and Andrew Black is down as Elizabeths Son. But I can see my mistake on the 1841. Jenny. |
