Debra, in my experience you need an open mind about names-I have a relation who is called Rosannah, Roseanna and even Nancy in different censuses, I have a Lydia who 20 yrs later calls herself Lilian.People didnt fill in the censuses themselves, an enumerator copied down the details, and had to undrestand( or not) local dialects.Think of how many times you get post misspelt from a company you order over the phone! People wouldnt remember 10 yrs later what they called themselves 10 yrs later.Birth certs are often registered by drunken fathers, death certs are registered sometimes by neighbours, so you can see the margins of error. Some people didnt agree with the censuses and wanted to be awkward as well.So , dont get hooked up on names, and dont throw away or disregard info - cos it might turn out to be correct further down your research.
