Sally, do you mean the Mormon site www.familysearch dot org? If so, this may sound strange but I find the less you try to specify the better-- eg just type in name and country and county, but do not specify anything else like births etc- for me it seems to like to show you everything---- anyway it is a good habit to get into to always check deaths on familysearch too, otherwise you will waste your time chasing ancestors who died soon after birth! Hayley-- you should link up automatically once your tree matches your mums--- when I found my 4th cousin on this site he sent me his tree, I entered all his details and our trees were linked with a sign like overlapping wedding rings automatically.
