Rosemary Went back into the Canadian site and found all the info I needed to confirm this is my G G Uncle Non! When you get to the list of names and rank/numbers, click on the 'A' in a box at the side of the name you want to check. A further page appears with the same details but just showing that person. Under 'Attestation Paper' are two icons that look like sheets of paper. If you click on these it shows a copy of the original 'signing up' details including the medical! There's more than enough info on there for free! I'm off to phone my Gran now!!!!

I think that with help from Rose's tip I may have solved the mystery. The Canadian site lists a William Albert Gurney who served in WW1 and his date of birth falls within the 'quarter'that a William Albert in my Gurney family was born. Maybe he was known by Albert, which was shortened to Al, hence a family nickname of Algernon! Just a hunch, but stranger things have been known. It appears I can send off for more details from the Canadian site, and it doesn't look TOO expensive. Thanks for all your help everyone.

Helen I have just found a Algernon Gurney on the 1901 Census, aged 14 but he was born in Battersea, London. He lived with Albert Gurney aged 39 born Tedbury Herts, and I think wife Mary Gurney aged 31 also born in Tedbury. and then another child Violet aged 12 born Battersea. they all lived in Battersea in 1901. They might be the same ones you never know. Because Algernon is a very rare name I think. Debbie

My 92 year old Nan remembers being told her 'Uncle Non' emmigrated to Canada with his wife Alice, when she was a very small child (1911-13)and then served in the Canadian Army in WW1. His full name, she believes, was Algernon Gurney and I am having trouble locating any records for him. He is not listed with his family on 1881 Census (Vainor Lower, Cardigan, Wales)and I beleive he was born after this time. But by the time of the 1901 Census (Aberystwyth)it appears he had already left home, but is not listed anywhere else on the Census. There is no birth or marriage on BMD. Although my Nan is very old, her memories of the past are very clear and I'm sure she hasn't invented this 'Uncle'. Does anyone have access to 1891 Census (do Ancestry.com do this?)and could check Cardiganshire records for me? I would dearly love to find this 'ghost' person. Also if anyone else has any ideas where else I could look........? Cheers
