You can also buy the 1891 census on CD, county by county for about £45.

Sorry to disagree but I certainly wouldn't say that £70 is a resonable price to pay for access to one census and a handful of other far less useful resources. Ancestry's 1891 census search engine certainly is excellant and is currently unrivalled however to get your moneys worth (compared to the 1901 census at 75p a household) you would have to view ninety three households. Most of the useful records Ancestry holds with regards to the UK are actually free anyway. If you are looking at a handfull of of families far better to get in touch with the local family history societies or other groups who might be happy to do lookups for you.

Sandra The 1891 census is available from ancestry.co.uk, but you have to pay a fee to access all the information. It is worth it. Regards Gary

I have notice one or 2 references to the 1891 census how do you access that please and best way of accessing any others prior to 1881 still very green thanks sandra
