I really put my comment on this tips board as there are so many people that are just starting out. I was not aware of all these problems when I first started,I have been researching my family for about 3 years now, and am still coming across problems clarifying data, so I thought newies to this site should be aware that not all info is what it seems to be! Anyway enjoy the experience of finding a new relative and happy hunting all of you Kim

Kim, All I would add to Rosalind's excellent reply is that the LDS did not compile their records to help us trace our ancestors. I don't know a great deal about the Mormon church but as far as I know the data was collected for religious purposes and doesn't have to be accurate re dates etc. As Rosalind says it is just a tool and you should always check info! Good hunting Beryl, Co.Durham.

I agree with you Kim. I have a number of actual certificates of BDM's that are not listed on LDS. I have found the most accurate way is to check with your registrars office. The best Web site I have found to far for Scottish records is scotlandspeople where you can download the actual handwritten copies for the cost of £1 each.

Just thought I would make people aware, I thought my ggggGrand father must have been an only child, as when I clicked on "family" on the LDS he was all that showed up, but when I put in the surname and random forenames I came up with 8 siblings!, I actually went up to Durham to check all this out (I live in Surrey so it was not an easy task for me especially with children at school!) So not all families have been linked by LDS, its worth remembering.
