I have a male relative whose occupation is listed on 1901 census as 'labourer masing general'. What on earth is or was one of those? He was living in Exeter, Devon at the time. Sue at Langley Vale Epsom Downs SRY

Maybe Masing is mason or machine.

Hi One of my family was listed as Labourer Crucible and Morgan Crucibles was the name of the company he worked for. I know this beacuse my nan told me. So, maybe Masing was the name of the company. Chris Worcester Park Surrey

Thanks for suggestions. Will try putting that in search engine. Chris My Mum worked for Morgan Crucibles too! My godmother visited me today, she also worked there. It's a pity I didn't come on site earlier, she would have been very interested. Sue at Langley Vale Epsom Downs SRY

Sue Its small world isn't it! Does that mean that your family came from Battersea too? Most of my family all lived in the area around Stewarts road in the period 1881 - 1901. Chris

Chris No we come from Southfields and Fulham areas. Mum was born in Merton Road in 1924 and my grandmother was born in 1901 but not sure of exact address. We lived in North Cheam from 1957. I moved to Epsom area after I got married but my Mum still lived in North Cheam until she died in 1997. It is indeed a small world. Sue
