Have just discovered my gr gr grandfather abandoned his wife and family to seek his fortune in Australia. I have him arriving on the Luconia to Victoria in 1854. How on earth do I go about tracing him from there? Any help very gratefully received.

Hi Vanessa If you let me have some info, I can get in touch with the records ofice in Melbourne (I go to Melbourne from Sydney every month for my job) I also have a keen family member who has so far traced all his relatives who came to Australia from Italy and settled in Dandenong VIC. Lots of European migrants worked on the railway from the mid 1800's, or other major industries and many made quite a lot of money! Let me know if I can help regards Di, Sydney

Thanks very much, Diane. He was William Frederick Restall born 1820 originally from Portsmouth, arriving in Victoria in June 1854.Having deserted one large family I wonder if he had any more?!

OK Vanessa I'll make some enquiries - it may take some time, but I'll keep in touch. (You just never know about those families! The ones I know about sent money home to their wives etc and had another family here!!! Di

Please could you tell me where I can access passenger lists (England to Australia) for the 1840's? Preferably on the internet! Thanks

I'd be interested in the existance of an on-line passenger list too. J.

Thank you, William. I noticed that it said Port B..but didn't realise it stood for Brisbane. Not sure that helps much though! Any information you can find would be very gratefully received.

I will also have a look at passenger lists to Australia. Family legend has it that my Irish Grandfather was thrown out of Australia! Don't know why? Yet! Kathy Epsom, Surrey
