If I build my tree, and another family builds theirs, how can I link the two together (initially I will want to link mine with my sister-in-law's)?

If you both use a GEDCOM compatible programme then you should be able to save each others trees onto disc. You can then load them onto your own machine and make the necessary links this way.

Thanks Alison, unfortunately I have only just started and am only using this site, no other software. Is there any way to connect on this site? Can you recommend any other suitable software?

one of you needs to find a common ancestor listed on the site belonging to the other, and click on it to send a message, when you have sent the message the contact will appear on your contacts list with the options of opening your tree to the other and indicating the ancestral link, the recipeient then does the same. Something along these lines, maybe you an link while composing the messge, I forget, anyway give it a whirl. Pam
