I also had problems finding a family on the 1881 census - a family by the name of Hanna in Hartlepool - I just couldnt find them under their surname at all. Eventually I took a different tack and tried searching using a combination of first names, birth years and birth places. Lo and behold I found my Hannas in Hartlepool, but they had been recorded (or transcribed) with the surname Hamer - a wildly different spelling to their actual name. It took a while doing it this way - but I managed to pin down the people I originally thought had been missing.

Hi Hazel, William Edward was born in 1874 and his first child was Robert Thomas W Dugdale born in Churchill Street Toxteth Park. I assumed this was where they lived as it is listed on his birth certificate. However i have not been able to find them on the 1901 census. alison

TO ALISON NEWBY Re the Dugdales In 1881 there was a four-year-old named as WILLIAM C DUGDALE living 72 Littler St. Everton father's name Wm. Dugdale I thought being 4 at that time would link up with having a child in 1901 If you have an age guide, I will try again Hazel Dalgety Bay
