I am interested in joining Ancestry/co/uk. Can anyone let me know if this is a good idea and is it worth the money?

I joined 6 months ago and I find it really helpful. The 1891 census is now on and you can view the enumerators sheets. Good luck Stephen

Wasn't too sure about this site at first - thought there was too much U.S.A. stuff, but now the 1891 census is on and sheets viewable, I am converted. Don't forget folks, you can see 'previous' sheets and 'following' sheets, so sometimes you can do a bit of detective work and turn up the unexpected. Some of the 'ancestry tips' which appear each day are quite good, others obviously only apply to the States but it gives you some ideas.

I subscribed to Ancestry yesterday and found three great grandparents in about half an hour on the 1891 and then copied the images off the census for my file. Great! It's £30 for three months, but I think is works out a lot cheaper that the 1901, because you have unlimited 'hits'.

Thanks everyone for your info. Will check out the frecen site first to see how that goes before I have a go at Ancestry. Only 7 days to wait! Again thanks.

Vivien - I think FreeBMD applies a rolling 100 year cutoff so unless you're a very old silver surfer I'm not suprised you didn't find yourself on there...! Can anyone confirm my logic?

Just out of interest, did you join Ancestry.com.? Am thinking about it myself.

Lisa Report 4 Jul 2003 17:13

Not joined yet. I think Im going to wait for free cen to come online in my area and then make a decision after seeing what I can find on there. I would like to try Ancestry's free 14 day trial when it comes on next though.

Have just looked at freecen - i've still got 34 days to wait. From the backdrop it looks like they're going to have 1841-51-61-71-and 91. oes this mean that because 1881 and 1901 are already on other sites they won't be having them! Sue.

can I point out that FreeCEN has NOT got all areas on yet, you may be unlucky as I was. Shelli

Lisa Report 4 Jul 2003 19:39

Dont know about that one. But all I can advise is to keep checking back on Freecen because Yesterday I checked and it said 7 days, today I checked and it said 4 days. So your 34 may whittle down very quickly.

Has anyone used the free 14 day trial and sucessfully cancelled it using the email option? I notice that the 14 day offer is still available using the links page on GC, but the option to cancel the trial invites you to telephone a US number or email. Obviously the email option is the cheapest, but I've heard horror stories about people who have said they cancelled but still eventualy had to make that phone call to the States to ensure the credit card payment was stopped. Just me being paranoid I guess. Graham

Graham, I have used the 14 day free trial and cancelled it successfully by e-mail, with no problems. I am thinking of being sneaky and trying again with a different user name, e-mail address and credit card!!

Graham

Graham Report 6 Jul 2003 07:25

Sounds like a clever move to me. Trouble is they'll probably do a match on your credit card number. Graham

Ancestry is quite good if you remember to do soundex lookups, after a frustrating xxhrs I tried this and found my gggrandfather as edward doeth instead of death also ann dowell as ann devill, I new she was on their because someone had kindly looked her up but I felt I couldnt keep asking other people so joined, looked at freecen but its still early stages lots not yet on but its one to keep trying. well back to the hunt sandra
