I have come across my first adoptions in my family tree. I wonder whether any clever person out there could tell me whether I should be looking for the Birth Surname (which I dont know) or the adopted surname (which I do) when looking on sites such as 1837online in order to get the reference numbers to apply for birth certificates? Thanks in anticipation! Sally, Coventry

Sally-Anne Where I work, we always tell people who have been adopted and a wishing to trace their birth parents, to apply to Southport for their ORIGINAL birth certificate. Children are usually registered before they are adopted then get a new birth certificate with the adoptive name. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Lynne
