Hi Janice Have you tried www(.)censusonline(.)com ---remove brackets you pay but is cheaper than travelling to look up St Catherines index which are held at some Local Library's and at Church of the Latter Day Saints --Mormons St Catherines index is the index for births,deaths and marraiges from 1837. Have you tried Freebmd site Ann,Darlington

Janice, If the people you are looking for were born locally you should be able to get the certificates locally. Otherwise you have to look up the reference number in the Public Record Office or National Archives I think they call it now. In my day it was Somerset House. You can do it online now I believe, Try the links on the left of these messages. Jim

thanks so much james, at least i have an idea of which direction to take, i will certainly try and get the birth certificates, but do I need an address for a birth certificate or just the year?

Hi Janice, It is good to see new people taking an interest in their family history. The interent is just a resource when you are looking for ancestors. The real sources are Birth, marriage & death certificates. If you have got ages from the census you can work out a possible birth year. Then you need to get the certificate which will tell you the persons father & mother's names. Good luck Jim

i live in scotland and am tracing my tree in gateshead/newcastle areas. I am new to this and only starting. have traced my grandfather,his brothers and mother on the 1901 cencus and dont know where to go next. any help would be much appreciated as i am tearing my hair out at this stage. thanks.
