This was our family surname at one time but the de was dropped. I would like to know where this surname originated from and when it was first brought to England.

Someone suggested earlier the www.behindthename website for the Elizabeth, Betsy, Bessie and Bess conundrum. I had a look at it earlier and it's quite interesting. It might help. Sue
