You can get an free earlier map online from OS old map WWW site. I think you can switch from the current map to the old map on their GetAMap site or go direct to old-maps site. These maps are dated between about 1850 and 1890 - others are available but have to be purchased. I agree that the Alan Godfrey maps are excellent and very good value at just over £2 each. An area like Leicester is certain to be well covered. It is also worth a WWW search because there are lots of other downloadable old maps around on the WWW. If a corner was named after the shop I would have a look for any books of old photographs of Leicester, there are a lot of these being published nowadays - local museum might have an online bookshop or even publish some books. Try looking at the local newspapers WWW site, I know that the Bolton Evening News publish many old photographs which they archive on their WWW site. MB

For the streets, check out Alan Godfrey maps at http://www.alangodfreymaps(.)co(.)uk/ They're reprints of old ordnance survey maps, around 1900, large scale (i.e. big enough to show not just the houses but the outside toilets) Excellent way to get a feel for what an area used to be like at the time, and also full of useful info for earlier and later periods, e.g. most housing that's been demolished was built before 1900 and will be there. Not expensive either Only thing is, they haven't covered the whole country yet

I found out that one of my great aunties married someone who owned a grocery store in markfield. well i looked on google for Joyner and grocery shop and it looks like a road was named after it- Joyner's corner, as the website said it was named after Joyners grocery store. Is there anyway I could find more out about the shop. And is there anyway I can find out old street names and what there names have changed to. thankyou!
