You could also try the library nearest to where he lived - most of them have copies of the local parish records. Jane

Most parish records are held at county record offices unless it's a very recent/current one. I'd recommend you contact the county record office for the area you are interested in and they will tell you how to access the registers. Graham

Can you tell me the procedure about going to churches to look at the records I have never done this before, do you make an appointment to see the vicar From Sue.............

Yes quite correct - certificates as we know them did not start till 1837 - so the best evidence you will get is a photocopy of the parish register. Graham

Yes the birth cert will give you the parents names but as he was born pre-1837 it wasn't compuslory to register births. also the main index didn't start until 1837 so you'll have to search the parish registers in the area he was born. Ithink I'm correct but am sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong!! Shelli

I am going to order my first birth certificate of John Dawson born 1819 Heighington Lincs, where do I find the information I need volume and page no.I want to know the names of his parents does this give me the full names of his parents? many thanks Sue.
