Hi Linda Haveyou tried the census records, they may give you a pointer. Perhaps some kind person could tell you who lived at the address shown on the certificate in 1891 and even 1881. I've looked on ancestry under surname but can't find the people you mention. Jeannie

Linda Have you looked on FreeBMD for his birth? If so you only need the reference to apply for the cert. If you can't find it, apply to Southport giving all the info you have and they will do a search for £11.50. That's a last resort though. Good luck. Lynne

Thanks both of you for your tips, but let me tell you how I've got to where I am so far. I've got grandmas birth and marriage certificate and ggrandmas marriage certificate from July 1891 which says her husband William Savage was 42, lived at 43 Hilmer St. Fulham at the time of marriage, and his father was Frederick Savage (deceased). On the BMD site there's a William Savage born in E. London in 1849 (correct year) but nothing on the IGI site. I just wondered if you'd know how to find anything else out, then I could send for a birth certificate to the appropriate registry office. Any thoughts welcome. Thanks. Linda.

Hi Linda You start with you and then your parents and their parents etc. No good starting at the other end and trying to work back down. Sorry to be obvious but it really is the only way. AND of course getting their certificates to prove it all. Have fun Mike

I've got a year of birth for a William Savage of 1849, born E.London, but how can I check he's my GGranddad? His father was called Frederick Savage who had died by the time William was married in 1891. William lived at 43 Hilmer Street, Fulham when he was married (aged 42),but that's about all I know. Any pointers at all will help. Thanks.
