Hello Sandra, Yes Base Born does mean illegitimate. What sometimes happened when a fatherless girl got married she would give Grandfather's name as her father. I have a similar situation with a prolific family in Oxfordshire where the children and grandchildren all lived together and the Alpha Male was the Grandad. Jim |

My GGrandmother's baptism entry reads as follows: Parish of Vernhams Dean, Hants. Date: 25th Feb 1849. Name: Martha daughter of. Parent's name: Elizabeth Wheatley. Abode: Vernham Street. Quality, Trade or Profession: Base Born . Performed by: G Alder, Vicar. I presumed that "Base Born" meant illegitimate. However, on Martha's marriage certificate to my GGrandfather Martha's father's name is given as William Wheatley. I can't find a birth record for Martha or the marriage of William Wheatley and Elizabeth. Help! Any replies will be greatly appreciated. Sandra, Lancs |
