Could not see any churches in Edmund Street from the aerial photograph on multimap. I would expect a spire or tower to stand out but it may have neither. Gary

Hi Jean, I think you are right esp in the city centre,I think I read that there was a church in Church St once and when they pulled it down they marked area with a cross it was the site of Woolworths, which I think is no more now. What is your parish? Thanks again for all your help Kathleen

Hi Kathleen. Circus Street ran between Christian Street and Byrom Street in the 1928 Book. However it is now somewhere under the Technical College behind the William Brown Street Library as that area was redeveloped.

William. You could well be right, because the A to Z only shows the existence of the building. Interesting that your remark caused me to look closely at the 1928 Bartholemew. Seems to be a bit of prejudice showing as all C of E Churches seem to be named eg St Paul's, but all the RC ones seem to say R C Ch, or does that just mean chapel. Kathleen, you mentioned the Church in Church Street. That was in fact St Peter's, THE Parish Church of Liverpool and the Liverpool Pro Cathedral until the present Anglican Cathedral Lady Chapel came into use, St Peters was then demolished in 1906-10. There were an enormous number of BMDs carried out there, eg 60plus baptisms on one day. All my wife's relatives were registered there. I was very interested to find that some of the pieces from St Ps were incorporated into a cottage built in Heacham, a small village near here (Hunstanton, Norfolk) Enough I hear you say!! Aye Keith

Keith Report 30 Jul 2003 21:03

Kathleen, hello. Last night I looked on the "old-maps" site at the Liverpool 1851 map, and when enlarged I could see the probable site of the Chapel. East side of Edmund Street at the Bixteth Street end. However the 1928 map shows the Cotton Exchange covering all that block, so that is where the Chapel is, under the Cotton Exchange built "early 20th Century " Oddly enough the Cotton Exchange has been redeveloped and is now being marketed as Posh Offices. See Google or other search engine.
