I have a ancestor disclosed as being born at Charring Cross, London, in 1860. Can anyone tell me if this was a residential area of London and how far did it's boundaries extend. Also was it working class or a profesional class area.

Charing Cross was a sub district of St.Martins. The Registers are now held at Westminster. From the Charles Booth Archives the area seems for the most part to be "fairly comfortable" to "middle-class". The Parish Church would appear to be St. Mary the Virgin. Hope this at least gives you a pointer in the right direction. Kathleen
