I have only been researching my ancestors for a few months and most of the information I have got from the internet, I havn't done much walking yet but that will be the next thing, the question I would like to ask is are all the dates right from the web sites because I have had a lot of information about my ancestors from a relative who has been researching my names for the past 25 years, he is a vicar so he should know about researching and where to get information from, well the dates I have found a few of them do not agree with his only 1 year out please can someone explain to me...from Sue.....

Sue Do not trust the dates on the online census sites. Not only can they be transcribed wrong but they may have been put down wrong by the enumerator or he was mislead. They can be right or a year older or younger, use them as a guide only. Gary

Sue, Are the wrong dates from the Census information? If so, then this is normal, the age of a person is recorded at their last birthday. This means that anybody who celebrates a birthday after April (ish) will have the wrong year of birth. I have found that some of the ages on Census information that I have found is up to 10 years out! Good luck Tracy

Hi Dates don't always agree. Remember many people weren't as literate as we are so ages, DOBs etc may be not agree from one record to another. Also census returns are taken on one night of the year so the age given will be say 20 on 31st March 1901, that doesn't necessarily mean that person was born in 1881 because his DOB may have been 26th October 1880. Hope that makes sense. Good luck with your searching

Going how far back? Before 1752, the year started on 25 Mar, so the day after 31 Dec 1741 was 1 Jan 1741, and then the day after 24 Mar 1741 was 25 Mar 1742. A common way of recording is to say 17 Feb 1731/2, where 1731 is what they actually called it at the time, and 1732 is what it would have been if they'd started the new year in January. Sadly IGI mostly doesn't do this, so you never quite know where you stand with it. A complication is that people didn't always take up the new-fangled new system straight away, so there are registers which carried on using the old system after it was officially changed in 1752. (1752 was the changeover year in England, other countries did it earlier, including Scotland I think?)
