Thanks Kathleeen The William I am looking for wasnt the boot and shoe maker, I know when he died its the wine spirit and beer merchant Im trying to find. The William Clifford on the census was born in the wrong place and my William had his own shop with apprentices of his own. Some kind soul emailed me with his date of death so I will send for the cert(His wife ran his buisness in 1904 at Tilbury Docks)So I think its the right date of death.Ive found over 70 related Clilverds through the 19th century 15 of them are William each time I get info that I think relates to one William it turns out its a new one

If someone was in their family home the night BEFORE the census folks came round, and then left to stay in a household where the census form had already been completed then they would not be recorded. Also if they are 'in between' residences. My great grandfather HAD to have been alive in 1881 (Walter Gabriel McKay, born in southsea in 1860s-1870's) but he does not appear on that census at all! Hope you find who you're looking for! -Kat

I'm not trying to be a clever-clogs--- but a 'journeyman' is someone who had finished his full term as an apprentice and had become a 'professional' in his chosen trade. I found this out the hard way - thinking my gg. uncle could have travelled around as a stone-mason.

I am trying to find members of the Clilverd family, just when I think Ive found them all along comes another. The problem is that different families appear and disappear form census to census. I found one family under the name Clitunce on the 1881. I am trying to find William Clilverd born 1823 in Bexley Kenthe appears on the 1901 census as a Wine spirit and Beer Merchant, but not on any of the others. He was in Burnham Kent in 1844 as again a wine and beer merchant along with another William Clilverd Boot and shoe maker.I cant find any birth for him on the IGI and cant find his marriage to Mary with whom he appears on the 1901.Would he have needed to travel for his job?
