Riley Ferguson: Born around 1870/2 in Bradford. Found in 1891 (19)and 1901 (30). No evidence in 1881 census. Married Selina Carter on 24/2/1896. Children = Leonard and Mary. No father on the marriage cert. Brother ‘Dicky’ found in 1891 census aged 17, but that is all. I cannot go further back than this as I do not know his parent(s). Have searched BMD for 1869 thru to 1872 with no joy. Searched BMD for his death, so far 1901 to 1941 with no luck. BMD also equals GRO. I have a Riley and a Richard Roban living in the workhouse in Bradford with their birthplace being Leeds. This is the only incidence of Riley and a Richard living together in 1881 of the right ages. I have considered name changes etc but how can I prove it is them? Thanks for the Rileys you sent but the ages do not match and also where is Dickie? I don’t think they were registered. Do you know where I can find out about name changes? I suspect however that you didn’t have to register then till the 1900s. Have considered Mother remarried etc and have a couple of very tenuous suspects but it is difficult to prove. I think I will stop there………… don’t want to bore you. lol John

The first time Riley appears is on the 1891 census aged 19. He marries 1896 (no father on cert!!!) is on 1901 census as Fergerson and then disappears. I think he is an alien. I have been trying to track him for months. John

Thanks for that. In regards to Riley, have you located him in 1881 if so why not track down any surviving records from local schools and see whether the admissions registers have survived as they will give his birthdate. George

George, I have a John Sunley aged 13 a tailor in hovingham. A Mark aged 11 Ann 14 Mary aged 84 widow, Robert 16 Jane 38, Mark 39 ag. lab., Hardwick 7, Mary H 5, William 9, Sarah E 1, Wish I could see your face when you get this lot. lol John
