And if they weren't called Eliza/Elizabeth - they were called Mary Ann! I think every 3rd wife or daughter or sister I have had to find was called Mary Ann! Sarah figures quite largely too!

What about sisters called Elizabeth, Eliza, Beth and Bertha? Didn't have much imagination in those days did they!

hi clarissa, i to have found that. i have a joseph born 1860 and died 1862, then in 1865 another boy came along and he was called joe! christine.

Hi I too have had that trouble my gt gt gt grandfather had two sons both with the same name, i asked at my local regester office and they said one of them may have died in infancy but having searched further i found them both in adulthood with there own children so i cant understand it either one of them is my gt gt grandfather but i dont know which one!!!! Christine

Giving a dead childs name to another child born later is not confined just to the 1800's,this happend a few times in my names in the 1900 's as well .

I,ve found my GGGGrandfather married twice and had four children from each marriage. However he has two sons both called Patrick one in 1854 and 1857. Was this the norm back then?
