Hi John, could you possibly help me again please. I can't possbily have the same 1901 census website as you have as after studying your instructions I've found that I haven't even got a SHOW BROWSER button to click onto. What I did was go into GOOGLE and download 1901 census decoder, once that had downloaded it seemed to disappear and bring up 1901 census and that's what I've got stored on my computer from the internet. Have I got the wrong one or have I made a mistake in the download of either along the way, because I think I need the one you've got. The one I've got lists things like Person Search, Advanced Person Search, Address Search etc. I then click Person search and a grid appears saying 'enter your search criteria' and asks for Last Name, First Name, Gender, Age on 31st March 1901, Where Born, Place Keywords then a SEARCH button to click onto... and alas this site is the one that isn't bringing up any of my family. Please advise. Tried the FreeBMD site that Anthony Clark suggested and I've found a few details on there like certificate numbers etc, so the info is somewhere, just not on the census website I have. Thanks Liz

Elizabeth From memory, as it is a while since I did this - find the site www.lancslist.info and download the COMPLETE DeCoder. An icon will appear on the desktop which is the one you should use to go to the 1901 census. The Decoder uses the PRO 1901 Census site but, as the name states, it decodes it. If you have downloaded correctly the usual 1901 census page will appear as normal BUT with additional boxes at the top. They are what John and I mean when we take you through the exercise. Hope this makes sense - if it doesn't I am sure someone else will have a better explanation. Yours Vera Manchester LAN

Hi Heather and Vera, By all means butt in :-) You're probably right and I haven't installed it at all. My computer has nearly been through the window quite a few times this week as well because of it ha ha. I'll try installing it again and also going through the channels that Vera suggested and hope it works better this time... If not I'll be back on here with tears in my eyes Love Liz

What the decoder does is groups your search results together by address. You will still have to pay if you want to look at a transcript or original record.

Hi, Got your message and it seems you have had a lot of help so far. Unfortunately you have to pay for the 1901 census. The decoder finds you the person just as the 1901 census would. So why use it? Well if you have say Fred Smith, even if you put him in living in say London then you will get lots of them. Now if you know his wife's name, use the decoder as I wrote and it will group the 2 together and then you know you have the right one. It saves you paying to look at all the Fred Smiths. Donb't be afraid to ask if there is a problem, as you see loads of people willing to help. Good luck, John Ferguson

Susan If you have installed the decoder, acces 1901 via that rather than the website. You don't need to pay to get the names and group them. Hope that makes sense. Lynne
