Did passenger lists show maiden names?

I know my great aunt emigrated to Australia, after marriage but not knowing when she got married and therefore he rmarried name I am hoping that the passenger ships held such records. Can anyone shed any light?

Hi There My Great grandmother emigrated to the USA in 1892. She travelled after my great grandfather and was only listed by her married name. I think this was normal practise. Regards Maxine

I agree with Maxine. If the woman was married then her married name would be recorded with no thought given to her maiden name. ALison

Hi Donna, I found 3 ancestors of mine (all brothers) had emigrated to Tasmania, Australia in 1857. One of them was already married, so it only showed his wife's forename. I was lucky to find their marriage entry on the 'FreeBMD' web site and that solved my problem on finding her maiden name. The other 2 brothers were single when emigrating but the Shipping List had named their wives (who they married in Tasmania), which revealed their maiden names. So, I believe if your ancestors were married before leaving the Country, it will be pure luck, if they do reveal the maiden name. I do hope you have luck on being able to obtain their marriage certificate, that seems the only hope?? Best of Luck. Regards, Dawn.

Many thanks ladies, I will try to trawl through BMD, as its after 1901 I dont think I will have much luck on FreeBMD - but thats the joy of Geneology!
