Thanks Robin. I had thought about joining the family history group. Will look into that publication

There's the possibility that his parents registered him with a different name and changed their minds. Also, looking at the 1881 census, if he was born in Leverton he may have been the first, the family having moved from somewhere else. So there's also the possibility that they actually moved there shortly after he was born, but he didn't know that. May be worth looking at the 1851 census before the registers -- Lincolnshire FHS have done a surname index for it, so you wouldn't have to trawl the whole district

Sorry only just got round to replying. His marriage is the one in howden and he was born in 1846 lincs. Have obtained the marriage cert so I have his fathers name but am now stuck. I'm thinking parish registers because his birth definetly isn't on 1837online or freebmd. Have tried other variations of the first and surname. I think a trip to Lincolnshire may be on the cards! He was definetly born then as I have the birth date of his son and the ages on the marriage cert correspond.

Judith Searched for Lakin in Lincolnshire on Free BMD as the 1881 census shows 2 Wilson Lakins born there. Found the following: WILLSON (sic) LAKIN registered Boston 7a 401 in the December quarter 1880. Is this your gg grandfather? The other Wilson Lakin on the census was born c 1846. Vera Manchester LAN

Judith, Yes, it it quite possible the birth was not registered - I think it is generally recknoned that 15% of events escaped registration. Also possible that the name has been crupted either in the original registration or in later transcription. One of my Fluellens became 'Flucken', but I have seen some quite obscure transcriptions of some names. Another possibility - were they born where & when you think they were? - people were not very good with dates / ages back in the good old days & hence birth dates given on eg. census returns etc may be a few years out, also place of birth given on such documents are frequently incorrect. Can you access parish records eg at appropriate County Records Office? Tony

This is where I am stuck. I know no further back than his name and date of birth and his fathers name. Unfortuneatly his father was called John. My gg grandfather was called Wilson Lakin which you would think would be easy to find with being unusual.

Is there any possibility he was registered under another name? Were his parents married at the time of his birth? Was he raised by another family member, whose name he took? I suggest this as I've spent the last few weeks struggling to find a relative in the births section of scotland online. In exasperation I put in another family name and hey presto! there she was. Good luck with your search!

Is it possible for a birth not to be registered? Can't find my gg grandfather on 1837 site and have tried searching several years each side of birth year. I have his marriage cert so I know he exists!Any ideas?
