Mary You could give the Royal British Legion a try. Terry

CWGC usually gives the place of burial, so if you go back over the names there, as you say he returned to the UK before dying you can eliminate those that were buried in France etc. HTH

Mary If you know his year of birth or even names of his family, try the 1901 census. Or he was not around then, try posting the details here and ask someone to do a lookup for you. Lynne Sale CHS

Thanks, Kathleen. TriedCWGC, but I don't have enough info- only his surname, no dates, nor address, let alone regiment, rank, or number. Looked at all with same surname, but parents/ place of address didn't ring any bells. Thanks for help- may have to see if anyone has any memory of same story, other than me! Happy hunting, Mary

Mary Try the CWGC if he was still in the Army when he died he should be on there. You'll find the site in the Links. Kathleen

Dad told a story of his mother's brother (from Co. Monaghan, Ireland), or maybe her half brother, signing up with British forces in WW1. Uncle was injured in France, eventually returned to hospital in Southampton. He died from gangrene, either inor just after leaving hospital. Is there any way I can start the trail to find him? I'm a beginner at family history, but I'm hooked already! Thanks for any ideas, Mary
