thanks crista but have tried scottish census . there is no records of him . he must have moved here to scotland .thought i might have found him om 1901 census he was married then with a child but couldnt find any of them on it .

Jacqueline, You need to get someone with access to the Scottish censuses to do a lookup for you. Chances are he was born in Scotland and the censuses you mention you checked are for England and Wales only. Crista

thanks crista, james mccarroll born 1877 where ? married in gorbals glasgow 1896 . died 3/1/1944 in glasgow .have noticed that mccarroll was spelt with only one L on marriage certificate, but then changed to double L on birth of his children ?
