I have very little info on my great grandfather william henry Young born around 1880 in the pontypridd area. He lived on a farm but had a major dispute with his father and left wales aged apprx 14yrs never to return. He travelled to Derby where he eventually joined the police force by lying about his age, he then married and settled in sheffield. I'm very new to all this, any ideas where i start??

Hi - don't think you will find either of the suggestions much use - Pontypridd is in Monmouthshire (now Gwent). Try the Latter Day Saints (Mormon) site for the 1881 Census and ask for Census 1881 for Wales, and put in Monmouthshire and the surname and see what happens - I'll look for you later in the day if you want. The suggested people were in West Wales. Jacqui

Hi there I am pretty sure that Pontypridd was in Glamorgan. It certainly was in 1901, as I have family that lived there then. Monmouth was next door I believe, and Pembroke further still. Regards Maxine

Pontypridd is definately in Glamorgan and many parts of Wales that were Monmouthshire, some parts are classed as Gwent, others are not. The address you have in Gelligaer would have been Glamorgan, now Mid Glamorgan.

thanks to everyone, pontypridd is in glamorgan, but still have had no luck tracing him, i know he lived on a farm or smallholding, and had 2 sisters older than him, of course brothers could have come along after he left wales. He went to gloustershire to join the police but ran to derby after they found out he was under age. Are there any sites that anyone knows of which i could try to trace the police link? Regards Sarah

Obviously Lesley and I know the area in question, as our answers are almost identical.
