Sarah Have you found your William on the 1901 Census? I wondered if this could be the one.... William Young, aged 23, Shunter Railway in Brightside Bierlow area of Sheffield. He gave his place of birth as Oakridge in Gloucester but if you look on the 1881 there isn't a William 3 year old +/- 5 born near there. Could this be your William trying to cover up his past? He wasn't living with any other Youngs in 1901.

Just a thought... maybe he was originally a Gwilym then changed to william to cover his tracks??

It looks as if the William Young in the 1881 census is the same as the one I found in the 1891 census (parents name the same anyway), but one has G and the other has J as a middle initial. So its quite possible this is your H anyway. I've learnt the hard way not to expect every detail to be right, its amazing how much gets changed. My grandfather is Charles in 1881 and Alfred in 1891. His brother changes from Arthur to Walter. So why not a middle initial? Jan.

I've found out he died in 1949(jan-March)so that makes him born 1978, my aunt has got pontypridd as place of birth, but i can't find anything. Tommy farr was born in 1914 in clydach vale/tonypandy so i pressume he may have known tommy's father.

Thank you... Jan, i don't think any of them fit, he was def a william Henry. He could have possibly still been in wales at 1991 as the dob is an estimate only.. Lesley, the history is very interesting... he also was supposed to know Tommy Farr's family (the famous welsh boxer) he always said he came from the same parts as him.

I'll see if I can find reference to him in the 1891, but presumably he will be in England then. Jan.

There is a William Young, born in Tonypandy in 1880, mother Margaret, father Charles. This info is on the 1881 census info, no brothers or sisters mentioned. However, according to the website his middle name begins with a J so not sure if it's the correct one. Cheers Julie

I've tried allsorts to find my great grandfather...as i'm new to this it's now getting to be a struggle! Here is what i know... Great grandfather called WILLIAM HENRY YOUNG, born in either;pontypridd, ebbw vale or tonypandy in glamorgan, south wales. I think he was born around 1880?? He lived with mum, dad, and had 2 sisters (no names)he lived on a smallholding/farm. At the age of approx 14yrs he saw his dad beating his mother and stepped in and by helped his mother by using a pitch fork to hit his father, his mother immediatley packed Williams things and told him to leave and never return!(he never knew for certain but assumed that he'd killed his father,as he was still on the floor when he left). He then travelled to Gloucestershire where he joined the police force, but as he lied about his age on joining, he was kicked out as soon as they found out. He then ended up in Derby, worked on the railways. He married ELiza Brailsford (who was from derby i believe). Facts i do know are that in 1909 when my grandfather was born they lived in Sheffield (Hadfield Terrace)and he was on my grandfathers birth certificate as a railway shunter.William and eliza had the following children; Albert (my grandfather)elsie, john, william, alice, and may.He died in sheffield around 1948/9. I need help trying to find out any details at all.... anyone any suggestions?? Regards Sarah
