Thanks to Crista for finding my gr grandfather in 1901. His name was spelled wrong and he was listed as "Quiglah" rather than "Finglah". I now have him recorder in my 1901 Census Decoder and tonight I was using the decoder to research some other family names and found the place he was listed as being a lodger - was in fact his sisters - Eliz Burton. All ID's were consecutive. If Crista had not helped me, I would never have tripped across John living at his sister's. So thanks again Crista. Penny

Hi Crista, no wonder I see your name come up when most people in UK have signed off - were on the same time zone! small world. I do check the members board, when I get a chance - but usually everone seems to be saying goodnight (lol) I tried to submit the correction last night to 1901 site, but wanted that information. I didn't think the information from the decoder was necessarily the same number that was on the actual census, but could try that Penny

Hi Penny, No idea what to put for the page or schedule #. I thought the page numbers vary each time you search. Can you submit the form without filling those fields in? I'm in Oregon, must be about 7 hours drive from you but we're in the same time zone. You should check out the Members board. There is a lady there from Tsawassen, BC too called Diana. Crista

Jennifer what a find!! (little do you know) Sorry for the delay in getting back to you - my 5 yr old grandson has been on the computer playing games -"Bob the Builder and related games" while his nearly 3 yr old brother sits and watches waiting for his turn. So when they are here, we have to take turns! (lol) Back to 1891 Census. If you are able I would appreciate any information you have on Finglahs and Starkeys. Hannah M Finglah (my grandmother) married John Starkey in 1900. Hannah and John show on 1901 Census. Up until then no one knew anything about the Starkeys. When I found out the date of marriage I looked and 1901 Census under Hannah Starkey (John being a common name) and sure enough there was John and Hannah I had no idea the Finglahs and Starkeys were living next door to each other. Although I do know that John and Hannah lived on the same street as Hannah's parents in 1901 Census. When I put out the request for help - I really was looking for ideas of how I might go about hunting from another direction. Had no idea You and Crista would actually take the time to solve my problem when you must have so much to do of your own. Again thank you both very much. Crista, do you know what the 1901 site wants for Page # and Schedule # if you want to give them information for a correction? Crista - what part of USA do you live in? My husband and I live in Canada - British Columbia on Vancouver Island.

The plot thickens! You have found John Finlagh in 1891 as a lodger, I found Barbara and some of the family, and more (same ages and names, etc). I have found Barabara Hanna Starkey, this is where it gets confusing cos when you read the original document it does have her hand written under Finglah, however for some reason when you search for her, it has her as a Starkey. The Starkeys lived next door to her on the census. The writing is hard to understand on the original document however, John is not living with her. Please email me and I will send you over the original document, so you can decipher it yourself! Regards, Jeni

Penny, I too have only found john as a lodger but that is only spelling his name as you mentioned in the email on 1891 census. I have looked on the 1881 census and have found these names: - 1. John FINGLAH - 1881 British Census / Stafford Head Gender: Male Birth: <1838> Cawthorne, Stafford, England 2. Barbara H. FINGLAH - 1881 British Census / Stafford Wife Gender: Female Birth: <1846> Doncaster, York, England 3. Frederick FINGLAH - 1881 British Census / Stafford Son Gender: Male Birth: <1869> Thorne, York, England 4. Amy W. FINGLAH - 1881 British Census / Stafford Dau Gender: Female Birth: <1871> Rhyl, Wales 5. Hannah M. FINGLAH - 1881 British Census / Stafford Dau Gender: Female Birth: <1873> Leeds, York, England 6. Florence B. FINGLAH - 1881 British Census / Stafford Dau Gender: Female Birth: <1879> Birmingham They are all one family in the same household in 1881. Spelling will be a problem, I will keep searching the 1891 for any of these names. Regards, Jeni

Crista, that is fantastic!!!! Thank you so much. Will have to beg to look at 1891 Census again, if and when I see the lady again and maybe try and fool around with the name. Unfortunately it doesn't let you give a lot of information - like ages where you might be able to have more success. Do I ever appreciate you looking at this for me - I would never ever have found that in a million years. Again thank you Penny

Penny, 9 times out of 10, if someone is missing from a census it is because of a spelling/transcibing mistake, this is especially the case with an usual name. I don't have access to the 1891 census but I think I have found John on the 1901 census. Name Age Where Born Administrative County Civil Parish Occupation John Quiglah 63 Yorks Cawthorne Birmingham Balsall Heath Boot Maker I found this by searching on his age, his first name and place of birth as cawth* Crista

Perhaps someone can offer some suggestions. I shd ask to begin with if the 1891 Census is complete when accessing Ancestry.com? I am research the surname "Finglah" there are not very many of them and the name has died out. On the 1881 Census there is a listing for John and Barbara Finglah (my gr grandparents)and the children born to that date (which incl my grandmother). On the 1901 Census, the entire family is listed except for John Finglah. I found his date of death on microfiche and he died 1916. I sent for DC and found he did died at home (where Barbara lived - one of his daughters was present at time of death) Now John was a shoe/boot maker. I am presuming he is not recorded in 1901 (now that I know he was still alive) because he was probably in the midst of travelling from town to another to work. (only a guess) There were also rumours he in fact got married again, but there are no records of that at all and the fact he died at home appears he was not married again. Someone I know casually told me she had a subscription to 1891 Census and offered to let me look up a few things if I wanted. Naturally I jumped at the chance and figured I would find all the Finglahs living together. I only found John Finglah living as a lodger at the time of the census. Now it may very well be - he was again travelling at Census time - BUT where have his entire family disappeared to?? I just used the surname, then tried it with Barbara and the children's names and could not locate anyone but John! Anyone have any ideas where the rest of the family disappeared to in 1891 to reappear in 1901 (except John) Do you think they were taking turns? (lol) Well if we ever get access to 1911 Census that could be interesting because everyone was still alive at that time. Penny
