British Isles Vital Records Index

I checked a few sites out, and I think some of the ads for it are misleading. The counties I want to search appear woefully incomplete, compared to others. Some parishes are only covered for 30 years or so and then they disappear altogether. If my local library had a copy, I'd look, but I can't justify the money when my ancesters may not even be included.

Good evening. I like the idea of seeing a "for sale" board on GC. It would somehow feel safer if you could ascertain if the records covered what you were looking for and I like to think that users of this site are not likely to rip you off. Roger

The easiest way to find a category to sell things on ebay is to find a similar item that's already for sale or sold and use the same category. That's what I've done when I've sold anything on there. Judith

I have Vital Records Index on CD dated 1998 probably there is a later version?). I have yet to find anything on it for my family that isn't online. I have noticed some records that have extra info, occasional ages at marriage and mother's maiden name on christening records etc. I can do look-ups for anyone if they want. Personally I haven't found it very useful and would have been disappointed if I'd had to pay for it (it was a freebie from a friend)

Thanks, Margaret. I know it's not a complete list of biths, baptisms and marriages, but how incomplete is it? Are new records added with each updated version? My relatives were always on the move you see, so sometimes all their children were born in separate counties, married in another and died God knows where. I quite like the idea of having the records on a few CDs.

I looked at that ebay site Judith mentioned as I would like to sell my BIVRI2 (which is really excellent if your ancestors were not RC ) ...the site is just so huge and impersonal I couldn't for the life of me see where Genealogy software could be sold. I don't think I would be happy to buy from such a site....too businesslike. I am going to ask GC if it they would consider a board for members to sell to each other. At least we sort of 'know' each other. Would anyone else be interested in that? Sue

The British Isles Vital Records Index and the 1881 Census CD-Roms are often offered for sale on ebay http://pages.ebay.co.uk/ Be careful though - some people pay more for a second hand copy than it costs to buy a new copy from the Latter Day Saints. Also, make sure which version of the BVRI you are looking at as a lot of people are auctioning off the first version of the BVRI. Judith

Thanks Margaret, I will go off to the Guest Board and see if I can track down Jacky. Thanks for the offer yourself - you never know I may have to take you up on it. Best wishes Janet

Hi Janet, It you go to the Guest Book and look at the thread on Look Ups, Jacky Jeffrey has kindly offered to do look ups. I am sure that she can check for you what is available in the area that you are looking for. I will be happy to have a look for you when I receive it but they said it might be a few weeks. Good luck. Regards Margaret

Hi, If the LDS have the information on the Vital Records Index then why don't they include it in the IGI. I have one area of Norfolk where there is no information at all on IGI. Does this mean that if the information for an area is missing from IGI they want us to buy this Vital Records index. Knowing my luck the information for the area I want wouldn't be on there either. From where did you buy it, and how much was it?

Can anyone tell me if the information on the Vital Records Index is any different from the information on the IGI records on the LDS site? I have ordered it today and was wondering if it was worth buying? Thanks Regards Margaret
